I often get questions about house training the puppy. One of the first questions I will ask, are you going outside with your puppy?
It is interesting when I hear a person is not going outside with the puppy. I hear the puppy is being put outside on a tie out or the area is fenced in. Then when the puppy is let back in the reward is given inside the home.
When house training a puppy, you should be going outside. This is an important step in the process. When the puppy is eliminating, you let the puppy know this is good and reward immediately.
The puppy learns, you like this and this has been rewarded and most likely to happen again.
When there are accidents in the home, there is no need for yelling or scolding. Once the act has been done they will not know why they are being scolded. It's over and in the past now.
I always suggest a good enzymatic cleaner. Clean up and move about your business.
100% supervision is so important. Now is the time you learn more about your puppy. A puppy will often start circling or searching for an area to eliminate.
I suggest keeping a log of when you let the puppy out. You will then begin to find out what is working with your training.
If you are catching your puppy in the act of eliminating in the house, then interrupt with a noise you can tap on the wall for example. Then quickly get your puppy outside with you and don't leave.
Good Management:
• crate
• baby gates
• Leash the pup to you
House training really is about 100% supervision and not letting your pup out of sight. Then rewarding the puppy outside.
Any dog that is eliminating in the house is not fully trained and training needs to continue. Not all dogs are the same.
If you are having problems with house training, ask yourself where are you?
The reward is outside and be consistent. Soon you will have a house trained puppy.
